Downey Duck Bainbridge Quarry
Bainbridge Quarry is a 27 acre lake surrounded by trees and the rolling hills of Pennsylvania. The diving accommodations have been designed for the divers' enjoyment at every level of certification.

What To See

Hundreds of fish including small mouth bass, trout, blue gills, and catfish which love to be fed by the divers and to follow you around as you are diving. In Spring all of the fish are laying eggs and you can observe the underwater nests and the new young offspring. Wonderful for photography or naturalist course.

In fall our "freshwater jellyfish" (Craspedacusta sowerbii) can be observed in our lake. They are non-stinging and range in size from a dime to a quarter. Look for the translucent to whitish umbrella shaped jellyfish with a whorl of tentacles around their base. You will see them from the surface down to about 30 feet.

In the water from the beach entry, 'Access A' there are several underwater attractions including, sunken boats, the "PENNSY" cement truck, a large corragated swim-through pipe, dynamite shed and several of the old buildings from when it was a working quarry. The underwater road which extends to Access B entry is always a nice shallow dive and great snorkeling with plenty of fish to see. Also beautiful wall dives with trees underwater.

Take your giant stride off out dock at Access "B" entry with depths ranging from 15 to 35 feet at one end and 50 to 70 feet at the east end. At 30 to 35 feet explore the pickup truck, a boat, an airplane cockpit, canoe, bathtub and plenty of our fish. At the east end in the 60 to 70 feet depths is a full size schoolbus.

For instructors, students and divers we have eight platforms at 20 feet, and two advanced platforms at 60 feet for classes and practicing skills.

The average visibility is 30 feet outside of the training areas and can often be 40 to 50 feet. In winter, early spring and fall the visibility can reach 60 to 70 feet.

Water temperatures vary in the summer and at the surface it is usually a pleasant 80 degrees and warm in the 70's to 30 feet. Any dives below 30 feet (because our lake is spring fed) will be cooler and a full quarter inch suit, hood and gloves are recommended. Temperatures will vary with the thermaclines from the 50's to 40 degrees.
