There's nothing quite like the thrill of diving a wreck for the first time. Descending, you gaze downward, trying to catch a glimpse of it. At first, you see nothing. Then a hazy outline appears, and for a moment you're confused as your eyes try to sort out what you're seeing. Finally, the wreck comes into clear view as you descend upon it, and it isn't necessarily a boat!.

It's no wonder wreck diving is popular. While most dive sites are natural habitats, a wreck is a work of man. Because of this, wrecks offer diversity, attractions and opportunities not found in "natural" diving environments. Still, the underwater world rapidly claims a sunken ship, quickly changing it into an artificial reef teeming with life. As a result, diving wrecks is an adventure in exploring man's loss and nature's gain.

Overview

This course familiarizes the diver with the skills, knowledge, planning,  techniques, hazards, and excitement of diving on wrecks.  The Wreck Diver specialty course is intended as a safe, supervised introduction to wreck diving.  You will also learn about the historical value of wrecks, and of social and legal issues surrounding that value.  Training emphasizes fun and safety. 

Program Description

  • Four scuba dives.
  • Penetration-training dives limited to within the light zone and within 130 feet from the surface, vertical and horizontal distance included.
  • Actual penetration is an option, not a requirement.

Program Steps

  1. Read Wreck Diving chapter in PADI Adventures in Diving and complete chapter review.
  2. Attend seminar.
  3. Dives can be made during any scheduled wreck diving trip.

Prerequisites

  • Age. Minimum is 15 years.
  • Certification: PADI Advanced Open Water, NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver or equivalent.
  • Previous Dives: The elective wreck dive from the PADI or NAUI Advanced Open Water Diver course may be counted toward this specialty.
