Does thinking about scuba diving at night make you nervous?  Night diving is exciting--the night shift comes out and the day shift has gone to bed. You'll see fish and critters that you'll never get to see during the day!   After taking this course, you will have the skills to safely and enjoyably conduct night dives, including the effective use of underwater lights. 

Overview

Just as people have varying reasons for being interested in diving, they also have different reasons for diving at night. While there may be as many rationales as there are night divers, the appeal of night diving can be put into five categories.
  1. Natural curiosity - "Because it is there, " is probably as good a justification for diving at night as it is for climbing a mountain. Many people dive at night simply to have a safe and controlled glimpse at something they're curious about.
  2. To observe aquatic animals - At dusk, nocturnal animals, such as lobsters in salt water or catfish in fresh water, become active. Other animals that are difficult to approach by day, including many fish, will let you get closer at night. Still others that you're quite familiar with will look very different at night. Coral polyps open at night to feed, for example, making the reef look "fuzzy" and colorful instead of hard and rocky.
  3. A new look at old sites - The mystery of night diving gives a new perspective and appeal to dive sites that have lost some of their daytime fascination . Night diving gives you a new reason to revisit familiar dive sites.
  4. More chances to dive - For many, diving during the work-week means diving at night, due to work schedules that typically make day diving impossible except on weekends.
  5. Colorful dives - As you recall from your entry-level course, water absorbs color so that the deeper you dive, the less colorful the scenery. When night diving, however, your dive light's beam doesn't get filtered through very much water, so you see more vibrant "true" colors that you may miss without a dive light.
After completing the Night Diving course, you will be able to organize and safely conduct night dives, and have a great time while you're doing it!
 

Program Description

  • Three scuba dives.
  • Maximum depth 60 feet.
  • Dives conducted any time from sunset until sunrise.
  • Recommended that the night dives be conducted at a site where the student has dived during daylight hours.

Program Steps

  1. Read Night Diving chapter in PADI Adventures in Diving and complete chapter review.
  2. Dives can be completed locally or during any tropical trip where night diving is available by boat or by shore diving.

Prerequisites

  • Certification: NAUI or PADI Open Water certification or the equivalent is required. 
  • Previous Dives: The elective night dive from the PADI or NAUI Advanced Open Water Diver course may be counted toward this specialty.
