Fresh water mountain lakes are often cool, clean and clear, with interesting aquatic life. In other areas, lakes are trapped in man-made resevoirs amid mountains that are high enough to require the special procedures of altitude diving. Altitude diving is your door to diving opportunities inland, away from the ocean, and amid some of the most beauriful surroundings on earth. 

Overview

Located in West Virginia, Summersville and Mount Storm Lakes have become popular dive sites; however, their altitudes require special dive preparations. The purpose of the Altitude Diver specialty course is to familiarize divers with the skills and knowledge needed for some of the more popular dive lakes at altitudes between 1000 feet and 10,000 feet. The goals of Altitude Diver training are: 
  1. To develop the student's theoretical knowledge of altitude diving.
  2. To enable the student to safely plan, organize and execute dives at altitudes up to 10,000 feet/3000 meters.

Program Description

  • Two dives on one day.
  • Dives are at an altitude between 1000 feet and 10,000 feet above sea level.

Program Steps

  1. Read Altitude chapter in PADI Adventures in Diving and complete the chapter review.
  2. Altitude training dives will be conducted at Mount Storm or Summersville Lake in West Virginia.

Prerequisites

  • Certification:  PADI Open Water, NAUI Scuba Diver or equivalent 
  • Previous Dives: The elective altitude dive from the PADI or NAUI Advanced Open Water Diver course may be counted toward this specialty.
